Solar Panels

Solar Panels

With the predicted increases in electricity costs there has never been a better time to invest in your own electricity.

Solar PV uses energy from the sun to create electricity to run appliances and lighting.  PV requires only daylight, not direct sunlight, to generate electricity.

PV cells are panels you can attach to your roof or wall.  Each cell is made from one or two layers of semiconducting material, usually silicon.  When light shines on the cell it creates an electric field across the layers.  The stronger the sunshine, the more electricity is produced.  The strength of a PV cell is measured in kilowatt peak (kWp).  That’s the amount of energy the cell generates in full sunlight.

The benefits of solar electricity:

  • Cut your electricity bills.  Sunlight is free, so once you’ve paid for the initial installation your electricity costs will be greatly reduced.  A typical home PV system can produce around 40% of the electricity a household uses in a year.
  • Sell your electricity back to the grid.  If your system is producing more electricity than you need, or when you can’t use it, someone else can use it - and you could make a bit of money.
  • Cut your carbon footprint.  Solar electricity is green and a renewable energy so doesn’t release any harmful carbon dioxide (CO2) or other pollutants.  A typical PV system could save around 1 tonne of CO2 per year - that’s around 25 tonnes over its lifetime.
  • Solar PV is reliable and requires very little maintenance.
  • Guaranteed for 25 years by the Government - it’s tax free and inflation proof.
  • If you are in the construction business, Solar PV installation may help you comply with greener building regulations.
Solar Panel Roof Orientation

Roof orientation:

South facing is the optimum orientation because it generates the most electricity and if the panels are angled at 30°.  When the optimum direction and angle are not achieved there will be a percentage loss in the amount of electricity generated.*

* The performance of solar PV systems is impossible to predict with certainty due to the variability in the amount of sunlight from location to location from year to year.  This estimate is based upon the Government’s standard assessment procedure for energy rating of buildings (SAP) and is given for guidance only.  It should not be considered as a guarantee of performance.
